Anna. Good points – and thank you for them. No problem at all with the ipad on the sofa scenario- and probably offers more than the “book over skype”, as there are the animations etc. Maybe it is just a discomfort about the ‘sanitizing’ of story. Or maybe I’m just getting old!

But i wonder whether it would change your conclusions if you looked at a different platform? What about a parent and child cuddled on the couch reading from an ipad (as my sister sometimes does with my neice), Is it the lack of physical book, or the lack of physical presence that is the problem?
I can see this noddy being an interesting alternative if a parent happens to be away from a child, although i wonder if you would come to the same conclusions about a parent reading from a physical book over skype. I’m sure that will seem a gift to parents away from their children or to grandparents away from grandchildren – obviously not the full experience but way better than long absences.
