Synthesized poetry

Masterpieces from Egypt

For those of us who watch from a safe distance, there are so many confusing images emerging from Egypt. First we saw sectarian violence, then defiant courage, then persistence, and then an uneasy new dawn. Spanish photographer Miguel Angel Sanchez moved to Cairo in 2009, and has set himself the task of creating a portrait of Egypt through portraits of its people.  These beautifully lit chiaroscuro portraits ooze dignity and beauty. Through Sanchez’s lens ordinary people take on the look of classical heroes. He describes this as a process where each subject is a poem which “must be synthesized”.
