The dangers of Twitter

No longer mine

It was mine. I had nurtured it and fed it. I had dressed it up in suitable clothes and taught it to speak like me, only ever using its ‘indoor voice’. I had kept it warm and safe and allowed it to run and jump and play in the nursery of my mind. Then, it happened. I must have left the door open, just a chink, on my computer, and it ran out into the playground of Twitter and scampered away. I was powerless to stop it, and I watched as it leapt across oceans, talked to strangers and jumped in puddles of other cultures. By the time it came back in to see me there were rips in its clothes, its accent was all funny, and it was grinning all over its naughty little face.

Yesterday I was preaching on the topics of prayer as place and prayer as process. As is my wont, I spent breakfast time on Saturday and Sunday in the company of Twitter. By the time I came to preach, my ideas had interacted with a Muslim Professor, a Jewish scholar and an Anglican Chaplain. (All pictured below) Thankfully for all concerned, they had been released from the narrow confines of my own mind and culture, and given space to play and expand.

Will you let your ideas out to play this week?

  1. *snigger* – I am amused that you couple these three together!

I have a penchant, despite being an evangelical charismatic, of listening intently to Roman Catholic teaching, particularly by the two recent Popes. My favourite Bible is a Catholic one. I also love listening in to Hebrew teachings and often use my Jewish Bible.

Its OK, my pastor knows this. And I am under instruction only to use the NIV when in his pulpit! Thought I once sneaked in a Hebrew New Testament as I like the title: B’rit HaDasha: The New Covenant.
